 The Council of Government Support to the Non-Governmental Organizations under the President issued a tender for the financing of NGO projects this year.  Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov’s visit to Poland has been scheduled on June 12-13. Azerbaijan’s Embassy in Poland told APA, on the first day of his visit Elmar Mammadyarov will meet with his counterpart Radoslav Sikorsky and will discuss with him the relevant topics and prospects of the bilateral relations. The Foreign Minister is also scheduled to meet with the Marshall of the Senate of Poland Bogdan Borusevic and Vice-Marshall of the Polish Sejm Yaroslav Kalinovsky. Elmar Mammadyarov will also meet with the Polish President Lech Kaczynski.

 US Congress House of Representatives will hold hearings on the recent processes in the South Caucasus on June 18. APA’s US bureau reports that Assistant Secretary for European and Eurasian Affairs Daniel Fried will answer the questions of the foreign affairs committee members about the ongoing processes in the South Caucasus, Georgian-Abkhazian conflict and recent progress concerning Nagorno Karabakh conflict. Marie Yovanovitch’s appointment as ambassador to Armenia will be discussed in the Senate committee on foreign relations a day later. Armenian National Committee of America stated that blockade of Armenia by Azerbaijan and Turkey, peaceful solution to Nagorno Karabakh conflict will be in the focus of attention.

 Energy Minister of Iran Parviz Fattah will visit Azerbaijan on June 16. Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Iran Abbasali Hasanov told APA. Opportunities for the Iran-Azerbaijan cooperation will be discussed and directions of the relations in the industrial, electric energy, water facility and other spheres will be determined within the two-day visit. The documents expected to be signed as a result of agreements reached during the visit.

 Amman has hosted a business forum that brought together representatives from tourism agencies of Azerbaijani and Jordan. Kanan Murtuzov, officer of Azerbaijan’s embassy in Jordan, said the forum open a platform for discussions in hotel business, ticketing and other tourism-related businesses. He added that two more businesses forums will be held in Jerash on June 11 and in Acaba near the Dead Sea on June 12.

 Jean-Claude Juncker, Prime Minister of Luxembourg has met Polish counterpart Donald Tusk, APA reports. The meeting debated proposals of Sweden and Poland on expansion of relations between EU and Azerbaijan, Georgia, Armenia, Belarus and Moldova. Prime Minister of Luxembourg supported this proposal and stressed the importance of expansion of cooperation with Eastern neighbors.

 Tow-day international conference on “Expanding the Role of Women in Cross-Cultural Dialogue” finalized its work in Baku, APA reports. In his address ISESCO Director General Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri highly appreciated the conference. He said the international conference initiated by the First Lady of Azerbaijan, president of Heydar Aliyev Foundation and member of the parliament would promote the role of women in the expanding of cross-culture dialogue. The Secretary General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu announced that Mehriban Aliyeva was granted with the status of OIC special envoy on the humanitarian issues and introduced the diploma to Mehriban Aliyeva.

 The Council of Europe has offered a new initiative condemning corporal punishment of children within the program Building a Europe for and with children. The new initiative will be inaugurated in the Puppet Show Theatre of Zagreb in Croatia on 15 June with the sponsorship of Yadranka Kosor, the Croatian Premier and minister on family, war veterans and solidarity affair, the Baku Office of the Council of Europe said to TrendNews.

 A concept on state aid to media is under development in Azerbaijan. “We will take concrete actions to provide the state aid to media this year,” Ali Hasanov, the head of the social and political department of the Azerbaijani President’s Administration, told to Trend News on 11 June. Several days ago, the Media Council made statements about the proposal of the state aid to media. After long discussions, the proposal was presented to the Azerbaijani President’s Administration.

 The politicians from Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia discussed the first meeting of Ilham Aliyev and Serzh Sargsyan, the President Azerbaijan and Armenia respectively, within the framework of the non-official summit of CIS countries in St.Petersburg on 6 June.  The National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan (NASA) and the UN International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) achieved an agreement on implementation of two projects to construct a research reactor in Azerbaijan. “One of the projects deals with complex universal gamma radiation source and the other with development of a research nuclear reactor,” Adil Garibov, Director of NASA Radiation Institute, said to Trend News on 11 June. On 11 June, IAEA representatives held negotiations in Baku. IAEA gave official permission to construct the first nuclear reactor in Azerbaijan.

 The communities and associations of Ahiska Turks, which act in 10 countries, united within the Coordination Council. Ziyaeddin Ismihanoglu, leader of Ahiska Turks in Kazakhstan, was elected the chairman of the Council. This decision was taken in the closed meeting of Ahiska Turks from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzistan, Russia, Turkey, Ukraine, European Countries and Georgia (except the United States and Uzbekistan). Ismihanoglu told to TrendNews that Mashati Turks, who live in Azerbaijan and Russia, want to return back to their motherland. “Mashati Turks have no problem in Azerbaijan, but still many of them want to go back to their motherland. Furthermore, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Georgia have good relations”.

 The oppositional Democratic Party of Azerbaijan (DPA) is striving for a dialogue between the opposition and government parties. “We think that the opportunities to develop political relations have exhausted, and we as an opposition do not want to make a revolution. Therefore, the dialogue is very much necessary under such conditions,” Serdar Jalaloglu, the DPA chairman said. The last dialogue between the political parties of Azerbaijan was held prior to the 2005 parliament election. Though there were some proposals to begin a dialogue so far, these initiatives never bore any success. According to Jalaloglu, the Opposition is ready for a dialogue. “The refusal to hold a dialogue can be considered destructiveness and anti-democratic move,” Jalaloglu said and added that DPA has sent the Government several proposals on dialogue since the party abandoned the radical course.
