 Joint Working Group (JWG) on the Implementation of the International Human Rights Standards in Azerbaijan held a press conference dedicated to the presentation of presidential elections projects. JWG expert Alimammad Nuriyev submitted his report on the monitoring of the freedom of assembly in the period of election campaign. He said the presidential candidates held only one meeting and applied for three meetings more in the campaign period. Nuriyev said the candidates used mostly the gathering format. The candidates held totally 451 gatherings with the participation of 371 thousand people so far.

Every region of Azerbaijan is developing, new enterprises, buildings, social and industrial facilities are constructed everywhere. A great work is done for the development of the transport sector in Azerbaijan. It is enough to enumerate new airports built in the country to see rate of development of the air transport”, said President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev at the inauguration of Lankaran Airport during his visit to the southern region.

 ICFJ’s Country Director in Baku, Charles Rice will hold forum in regard to presidential elections in Azerbaijan, APA reports. Mr. Rice noted that the forum would be aired via internet and TV Channels for the purpose of increasing awareness discuss economic and political reforms, political pluralism, and situation of media. The forum will bring together CEC officials, parliamentarians, ambassadors, political scientists, media and NGO representatives. The forum will be held in hotel Park Inn on October 10.

 Azerbaijan Export and Investment Promotion Foundation (AzPromo) plans to hold a series of events by the end of this year, said Emil Majidov, President of AzPromo. “We plan to hold business forums in Mexico, the Netherlands and other countries in early November and several companies have agreed to take part in these events,” he added.

 The proposed Baku Intelligent Transport Management System Project was unveiled at Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Transport on October 8. Musa Panahov, Deputy Minister of Transport, said an agreement was reached with a South Korean company in May for the introduction of the intelligent transport management system in Baku.

 Presidential candidate, Chairman of the United Azerbaijan Popular Front Party Gudrat Hasanguliyev has met electors in Azerbaijan’s Shaki Region, APA Shaki–Zagatala bureau reports. The Candidate provided information about election platform and spoke about current problems in Azerbaijan and their solution.

 The Central Election Commission (CEC) decided to install web cameras in 500 polling stations during the October 15 presidential elections, said CEC Secretary Natig Mammadov at the Commission’s meeting on Wednesday, APA reports. He said besides the observers the public community would also get an opportunity to watch the voting process. Web cameras will provide obviousness in the voting progress and to fix illegal interference. The cameras will be installed by the Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies.

 Youth Forum of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) put forward new initiative at the 4th conference of the OIC ministers of education and science to recognize Khojali tragedy internationally. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan told APA the forum proposed to include reports about the Khojali massacre in the high school books in the OIC member countries.

 Azerbaijani Consul General to Istanbul has sent about 600 notifications to vote in presidential elections on October 15, Consul General Sayyad Aran told APA that about 600 Azerbaijani citizens had been registered in the diplomatic representations. Moreover, the diplomat stated that many people were expected to come and vote on the Election Day.

 A peace-building video teleconference that allowed US students to interact with students in Baku, Azerbaijan, was hosted recently by the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. About 100 participating students from both countries exchanged views on religious questions, culture, educational goals and life expectations. Vice Consul of Azerbaijan’s Consulate in Los Angeles Elman Abdullayev told APA the US Catholic, Protestant, Jewish and Muslim students asked questions about the religious tolerance, human rights and economic reforms in Azerbaijan. Azerbaijani students took interest in the upcoming presidential elections and current financial crisis in the United States.

 “We are interested more in the elections basing on legal principles than in the winner of the presidential elections in Azerbaijan,” International Foundation for Election Systems (IFES) Azerbaijan Chief of Party Daniel Blessington said, APA reports. He said that compared with 2005 election legislation had been improved. “There are problems related to the Electoral Code even in the United States. There is no perfect election system, but we are trying to make progress and find a variant close to perfect,” he said.
