 Deputy Foreign Minister Araz Azimov will represent Azerbaijan in the meeting on Caucasus Stability and Cooperation Platform in Istanbul. APA reports that the meeting will be held on January 26. The initiative was put forward by Turkish prime Minister Rejep Tayyip Erdogan after the military conflict between Russia and Georgia in August last year. The aim of the platform is to ensure peace and stability in the region.

 Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov has today received Russian ambassador to Azerbaijan Vasili Istratov. Press Service of the Ministry told APA that V. Istratov presented the Russia’s reply note regarding the note 5/10-080/04/09 of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Azerbaijan dated on January 15, 2009, stating the Defense Ministry of Russia gave or sold $800 million arms and ammunitions to Armenia armed forces.

 “The voters will be able to participate at the referendum with the deregistration cards”, said the chairman of the Central Election Commission Mazahir Panahov at the meeting of the body, APA reports. He said that the CEC will initially prepare 100 000 deregistration cards and send them to the election subcommissions. Later, if needed, additional cards will be printed.

 The Ad Hoc Tender Committee held its first meeting on Wednesday as part of the AzerSpace National Satellite Launch Project. Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technologies said it has invited tenders from some 10 satellite firms of a number of countries, including the United States, Russia and China. The US-based Boeing and Orbital Science have also invited to submit their bids for the manufacturing and launch of the satellite.

 European Commission held “kick-off” meeting for the new projects in the field of European Initiative on local organizations and democracy, human rights”. Director of the EuropeAid Co-Operation Office of the European Commission Marcus Cornaro said 9 projects were selected among the fifty projects submitted to the tender commission, APA reports.

 The Azerbaijan Central Election Commission (CEC) registered the initiative group on referendum of the governing New Azerbaijan Party (NAP) on Jan. 22. The initiative group was named the New Azerbaijan Party. It submitted 46,950 referendum membership lists to the CEC, with 43,881 valid and 3,069 invalid, CEC Secretary Natig Mammadov said.

 Several initiative groups on referendum are illegally collecting voters’ signatures to become registered at the Central Election Commission (CEC), CEC Chairman Mazahir Panahov told journalists on Jan. 22. “They are collecting voters’ signatures by deceiving them. They say it is for a national census or to solve their social problems.

 The European Commission is prepared to provide ?16 million in finance once Azerbaijan agrees to reform its judicial system, representative of the European Commission’s office in Baku Jean-Lui Lavrof said. Lavrof said the finance aims at reforming judicial system, raising skills of judicial workers and reinforcing work of the Justice Academy.

 Academics from the Azerbaijani National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) are forming a referendum initiative group. “Meetings of the preliminary initiative groups were held at the ANAS and representatives were named,” Academic Secretary of the ANAS Presidium Sarkhan Abbasov told Trend News on Jan. 22.

 The status of Azerbaijani-ex-Presidents will be considered after the referendum. “We will seriously think about this issue after changes to be made in the Constitution,” a member of the governing New Azerbaijan Party Political Council MP Aydin Mirzazade told Trend News. To determine the status of ex-Presidents of Azerbaijan needs the experience of foreign countries and views of deputies must be learned.

 President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met with his Bulgarian counterpart Georgi Parvanov on Jan. 22, Azertaj state news agency reported. The Presidents expressed content with the level of development of relations in political, humanitarian and other fields and great potential for deepening mutual ties and economic cooperation. The Presidents emphasized good prospects to enhance energy cooperation.
