How true are these reports?

 Goran Lennmarker, OSCE Parliamentary Assembly’s Special Representative for Nagorno-Karabakh and South Ossetia gave a short report to the Standing Committee this morning. Director of Communications Klas Bergman told APA that the report was about Nagorno-Karabakh and conflict in Georgia. He said that status quo in Nagorno-Karabakh is not acceptable and that the only solution is a peaceful solution. He said he hopes a solution will happen this year, in 2009.

 “Unfortunately, the issue on Turkey’s retracting from the term of Nagorno-Karabakh to establish relations with Armenia is partially covered in Azerbaijani media. We know this issue as much as Azerbaijani media does. According to Armenian service of Radio Liberty, Turkey decided to open borders, establish diplomatic relations with Armenia and retracted from its previous position in order to make this decision.

 The Azerbaijan’s manat remained as one of the most stable currency in the region and CIS area, according to a ranking list released by Finmarket. The Azerbaijani manat ranked second only to the Iranian rial in terms of stability, according the list based on the exchange rates of the Central Bank of Russia. According to the report, the manat strengthened by 18.43% against the Russian ruble.

 Azerbaijan and Iran have agreed to keep working on seven documents on economic cooperation, Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov told reporters at the end of the seventh meeting of the Azerbaijan-Iran Economic Cooperation Commission in Baku. The commission will cooperate in energy, communication and transport, economy, trade, economy, banking, agriculture, culture, tourism and jurisprudence, Mammadyarov said.

 ISESCO condemns destruction of historical monuments in Azerbaijan’s occupied territories by Armenia, ISESCO Secretary General Abdulaziz Bin Osman Al Twaijri told journalists in Baku on Feb. 19. As a result of Armenia’s aggression against Azerbaijan, a plenty of Azerbaijani historical and cultural monuments have been destroyed, including 464 historical monuments, over 40,000 fancy-works and 4.6 million books.

 On Feb. 19, the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev signed an order on perpetuation of people’s poet Bakhtiyar Vahabzade’s memory, AzerTaj state news agency reported. According to the order, the Executive Power of Baku City must name one of the streets of Baku after Bakhtiyar Vahabzade and establish memorial plank on the building, in which people’s poet lived (Istiglaliyyet str. 9), the Executive Power of Sheki City must name one of the streets of Sheki city after Bakhtiyar Vahabzade and ensure the construction of the bust of people’s poet in this city.

 The Azerbaijani Central Election Commission (CEC) said sufficient free airtime will be granted to referendum initiative groups. “Referendum initiative groups that want more airtime can receive it on a paid basis.  On Feb. 19, referendum training began for the members of Azerbaijani constituencies. The Central Election Commission (CEC) organized the training with the International Fund for Election Systems (IFES). The training will last from Feb. 19-23. The CEC training group will conduct a practical study on voting procedures and polling processes.

 NATO-Azerbaijan cooperation will be discussed in Baku. NATO experts will visit Azerbaijan in late February, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry press service said. According to the NATO-Azerbaijan plan, NATO Joint Forces Command Naples experts will meet with Azerbaijani Defense Ministry officials from Feb. 24-26.
