The Azerbaijani municipal elections run in accordance with the standards and laws of the country, Azerbaijani Ombudsman Elmira Suleymanova said today. So far, observes have not recorded any serious violations, she added.
About 38 employees of the Ombudsman Office monitor the electoral process and they have not reported on any violations yet, Suleymanova said.
She appreciated the fact that a lot of women were nominated at today’s elections.
Azerbaijan launched the municipal elections. The country has about 4.6 million registered voters.
Voting began in constituencies throughout the country at 08:00 a.m.
About 15,682 members are planned to be elected to 1,718 municipalities. Municipal elections were held twice in 1999 and 2004.
Azerbaijan has registered about 31,000 candidates, including 6,108 women, for municipal members. Candidates from 18 political parties have been registered for elections. Candidates refer to 30 political parties.
The CEC will provide information on ballots at 10:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.
The municipal elections will be finished at 7:00 p.m.
The CEC registered 48,388 observers, including 1,160 local observers and 52 foreign observers.
