Municipal elections in Azerbaijan held in democratic atmosphere

The voting in the municipal elections in Azerbaijan was held transparently and in accordance with the democratic norms, the Association for Civil Society Development in Azerbaijan (AVCIYA) said.

All the information about the voting process, facts of law offences, voter turnout has been collected in the election headquarters of AVCIYA, the association’s head Maharram Zulfugarli said at a press conference on Dec.24.

He added that the final report will be made public on Jan.8, 2015.

Zulfugarli said the results of the monitoring of the elections by AVCIYA show that the voter turnout in 400 polling stations totaled 39.7 percent.

He added that based on the results of the monitoring, the association considers the municipal elections held in Azerbaijan valid.

Azerbaijan held municipal elections on Dec.23. The polling stations in the country opened at 08:00 (UTC/GMT +4 hours). The voting ended at 19:00 (UTC/GMT +4 hours).
Around 15,035 members of 1,607 municipalities should be elected.

The election was conducted on 118 constituencies. The voting took place at 5,015 polling stations. Around 4,887 are permanent and 128 – temporary. The municipal elections were not held in seven constituencies situated in the territory occupied by Armenia.
